When most of us are heading for bed at night there’s a band of food lovers on the prowl for somewhere good to eat. Many work in hospitality and are looking for a bite to eat before heading home, while others are looking for some sustenance after a night on the town. Either way here’s options for those with late night munchies.
Embassy Taxi Cafe – A visit to this Spencer Street institution is like stepping back in time. Back to an era when burgers and steak sandwiches were made fresh and with care, when the tables were topped with Formica and service was down to earth. Order one of their beef burgers with the lot (patty, bacon, egg, tomato, onions and shredded lettuce) and you’ll soon be a new devotee. You won’t have any trouble getting a cab home either! 547 Spencer Street, West Melbourne
Pellegrini’s Espresso Bar – When all you need is a pit stop for a heart stopping coffee then the famous Pellegrini’s wil always hit the spot. It’s been pumping out authentic Italian-style since the 1950’s and is still going strong. Order a short black and you’ll soon be fuelled with caffeine and ready for the journey home. 66 Bourke Street, Melbourne
Stalactites – This foodie hot-spot on the corner of Lonsdale and Russell Street is a perennial favourite of those who love their souvlaki. It gets absolutely packed some nights, but that’s half of the fun. The beautifully cooked lamb wrapped in warm bread with salad and garlic yoghurt sauce is well worth the wait. 177-183 Lonsdale St, Melbourne
Supper Inn – This legendary Chinese restaurant is tucked away up the cobble stone lined Celestial Avenue. The décor hasn’t changed in decades, or the menu really, but that doesn’t stop devotees streaming in until 2.30 am. Favourites include roast suckling pig and chilli salt quail. 15 Celestial Avenue, Melbourne
Melbourne Kebab Station – Those heading north out of town and looking for more than just a snack should make a beeline for the Melbourne Kebab Station. It’s a busy, buzzing sort of place with friendly service and speedy service. The classic doner kebab of spit-roast lamb in Turkish bread with salad and garlic sauce is the pick of the place. Not as late opening as some on this list. Shop 9/10, 451 Sydney Road Coburg, 9355 7766.
Melbourne Supper Club Bar – This has to be one of the most laid back and relaxing spots to ease an attack of the munchies. Nestled above Spring Street it offers a comprehensive wine list, plenty of beers and a menu which runs from caviar and party pies. It’s not easy to get into the place, but it is very easy to stay. Slide on into one of the super comfy couches and enjoy. Level 1, 161 Spring Street, Melbourne.
